Gwinnett County was created on December 15, 1818 the county was named for Button Gwinnett, one of the delegates to have signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence on behalf of Georgia.
This county is a part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area (Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area). It contains many important suburbs of Atlanta, many of whose residents commute using Interstate 85.
